✨ Understanding Our Colours: Mica, Crushed Opals & How Inclusions Shape Your Piece
When you choose a memorial piece with us, you’re not just choosing a design — you’re choosing the colours, textures, and tiny details that will hold someone incredibly precious. Every element plays a part in how your finished piece looks, and we want you to feel confident and informed when making those choices.
Below is a simple guide to how our colours work, the difference between plain mica and crushed opals, and how inclusions like ashes or hair/fur can subtly change the final appearance.
🌈 Mica Colours: Soft, Smooth & Consistent
Mica powder gives a solid, even colour with a gentle shimmer. It’s perfect if you prefer a clean, classic look without too much texture.
What mica looks like in your jewellery:
-
Smooth and uniform
-
Soft pearlescent sheen
-
No visible sparkle pieces
-
Ideal for a calm, understated finish
Mica is a beautiful choice if you want the focus to be on the inclusion itself rather than the colour texture.
✨ Crushed Opals: Sparkly, Textured & Full of Depth
Crushed opals add a completely different character. They bring tiny flashes of colour, depth, and a more textured, gemstone‑like appearance.
What crushed opals look like in your jewellery:
-
Iridescent sparkles that catch the light
-
More movement and depth within the colour
-
A slightly textured, magical finish
-
Perfect if you want something eye‑catching or celestial
You can choose:
-
Plain mica for a smooth, subtle look
-
Mica + crushed opals for shimmer and dimension
-
Crushed opals only for maximum sparkle
Each option creates a different mood, and all are beautiful in their own way.
🧬 How Inclusions Affect the Final Look
Every inclusion is unique — just like the person or pet it represents. Because of this, the final appearance can vary depending on what is being set inside your chosen colour.
🐾 Hair or Fur
Hair behaves differently depending on its natural colour.
-
White or very light hair Almost always turns translucent once set in resin. This means it may not be clearly visible, especially in lighter colours. We will always place it carefully and respectfully, and even if you can’t see it clearly, it is absolutely in there.
-
Dark hair or fur Usually remains visible in most colours, especially lighter shades.
Some families choose hidden inclusions, where the hair is placed inside the piece but not intended to be visible. This is a lovely option for those who prefer a more private keepsake.
🌿 Ashes
Ashes tend to stay visible in almost all colours.
-
In mid‑tone and darker colours, ashes show clearly and create a soft, natural texture.
-
In very light colours, especially white, ashes may appear more subtle or faint.
Ashes have their own natural variation — some are fine and pale, others darker or more textured — so each piece will always be slightly unique.
💛 Choosing What Feels Right
There’s no right or wrong choice — only what feels most meaningful to you.
-
If you want a smooth, gentle finish, choose mica.
-
If you love sparkle and depth, choose crushed opals.
-
If you want your inclusion to be more visible, consider a mid‑tone or darker colour.
-
If you prefer a hidden inclusion, lighter colours or mica-only options work beautifully.
Every piece is made with care, intention, and respect. No matter which colours or inclusions you choose, your loved one will be held safely within your jewellery.💛
