How to Store Cremated Ashes Safely at Home
Share
Receiving a loved one’s ashes is a profound and deeply personal moment. For many families, it can be some time before they feel ready to decide what to do with them — and that’s completely okay. There is no right or wrong timeline for grief.
Whether you’re waiting until you’re emotionally ready, saving up for a special memorial piece, or simply unsure of your next step, knowing how to store ashes safely at home in the meantime will give you peace of mind that they are protected and cared for.
Are Cremated Ashes Safe to Keep at Home?
Yes — cremated ashes (also known as cremated remains or cremains) are completely safe to keep at home. They are sterile, non-toxic, and pose no health risk.
Many families choose to keep ashes at home permanently, while others store them temporarily while deciding on a permanent memorial. Either way, the most important thing is that they are stored carefully and respectfully.
How to Store Ashes Safely at Home
Choose the Right Container
The container you use matters. Ashes should always be stored in:
- A sealed, airtight container — to protect against moisture and air
- Something sturdy and secure — to prevent accidental spills
- A dedicated urn or keepsake box for longer-term storage
If ashes have been returned to you in a temporary plastic bag or basic container from the crematorium, we’d always recommend transferring them to something more secure and meaningful for home storage.
Find the Right Location
Where you store ashes is just as important as how. We recommend:
- A cool, dry place away from direct sunlight — UV light can degrade some containers over time
- Away from damp or humidity — bathrooms and kitchens are best avoided
- Out of reach of children and pets — somewhere safe but accessible to you
- Somewhere that feels right for you — a shelf, a sideboard, a bedside table — wherever brings you comfort
Label the Container
This is often overlooked but important — particularly if ashes may be stored for a longer period or if multiple family members are involved. A simple, discreet label inside or underneath the container can avoid any confusion in the future.
How Long Can Ashes Be Stored at Home?
Indefinitely — cremated ashes do not deteriorate and can be kept safely for as long as you need. There is no time limit on storing ashes at home in the UK.
